The Local Area - Snowdonia
Machno is an ideal base for touring the wonderful mountains and villages of Snowdonia, and for visiting the many other attractions and places of interest in this beautiful part of Wales.
The Porthmadog area is encircled by mountains and sea, and is a picturesque gateway to Snowdonia and the Llyn Peninsula. There are many safe and spectacular beaches close by, including Black Rock Sands, Borth-y-Gest, Pwllheli, Abersoch, Harlech and Aberdovey, all of which cater for safe swimming and sun-bathing, with outstanding views.
Portmeirion Village & Gardens are within walking distance (1 mile), as are the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Steam Railways.
Porthmadog town centre is only a short drive away with its many and varied shops, restaurants and public houses. There are also shops, pubs and takeaways in Penrhyndeudraeth which is one mile away.
The more adventurous amongst you will be spoilt for choice. Attractions include Zip World, Quad biking, Bounce Below, and many opportunities for mountain climbing and biking. The trails at Coed Y Brenin are within easy reach. Snowdon is 20 miles away and you can either walk or get the steam train up to the top – booking ahead is recommended if you fancy the train option!
For golfers there’s a number of courses, including the world-class championship links course Royal St David’s at Harlech (15 mins drive), as well as Nefyn with its breath-taking cliff top setting, Abersoch and Porthmadog, which has stunning views of the Cardigan Bay coastline and Snowdonia mountain range.
The beautiful gardens at Bodnant, Plas yn Rhiw, Portmeirion and Plas Brondanw are all nearby and there are many castles to visit, including Harlech and Criccieth. There are also lots of attractions for children.
